Nov, 14 2008
This is a wonderful mail circulating in favour of RAJ Thackerey have a look
We all should support Raj Thackeray and take his initiative ahead by doing more...
1.
We
should teach our kids that if he is second in class, don't study harder.. just beat up
the student coming first and throw him out of the school
2.
Parliament should have only Delhiites

Three centuries of guidance & current reflections
tejbir -
Oct, 18 2008
20
th
of this month will mark 300 years of guidance that my community – Sikhism, has been receiving from its present and eternal guru – Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS).
Yesterday in office, my colleagues were asking me questions and I was surprised to know that not much is known about SGGS outside my community. So I thought to put up some information on SGGS here. To keep it brief I am giving a few ... [continue]

The facets of banking...
tejbir -
Sep, 29 2008
Post the great depression in 20s, the Glass Steagall Act was enacted as it was found that the then twin functions of banks – corporate banking and investment banking carried conflicting interests. After many years, in 90s the Fed decided that banks were mature enough to let them perform both the functions and repealed the Glass-Steagall Act thereby showing its commitment to the capitalist system o... To bee or not to bee?
tejbir -
Sep, 11 2008
The August’08 issue of GEO carries a good description of honeybee lifestyle. And any reference to the insect does invoke my interest as it immediately take me some years back when a whole swarm of honey bees chased me and beat me in 400 m dash though I still think I would have rescued myself had my brother not refused to open the main gate of our house out of fear on seeing me chased by hundreds o... The ghost of MPBF
tejbir -
Jul, 19 2008
When I started my career, this MPBF (Maximum Permissible Bank Finance) was something I took pretty long to understand and by the time I understood as required by RBI under the Tandon’s 2 of the 3 Methods, the RBI decided that Indian banks were mature enough to be deregulated on MPBF and hence gave the banks freedom to assess the borrowing requirements of their borrowers (over a threshold). But man... [continue]

setting the costing right

Jul, 13 2008
The current issue of BusinessWorld is centered around India’s cost of growth and the article “The Price of Growth” by Rajeev Dubey made a very interesting read (you can read it
HERE
). Some key points that he highlights are:
Corporate India’s interest expense has increased by ~ 29% in Jan-Mar 2008 which is fastest in the past 10 quarters and compares starkly with the range of 2 to 7% in the weste... [continue]

I don't see the shortchange
tejbir -
Jul, 6 2008
In the current issue of “
MoneyLife
”, R Balakrishnan in the article “Minority Shortchanged” has argued that Minority Shareholders need a better deal than the offer of 20% which the acquirer is required to make to the shareholders of the target company under SEBI’s regulations. The reason being that promoters get a better deal if they sell their 100% stake to the acquirer at a premium while the ot... [continue]

"Investment" Analysts in danger?
tejbir -
Jun, 22 2008
Mint carried an article on Investment Analysts that their jobs are in danger owing to bad showing of the stock markets.
What it says is that with stock markets providing negative returns, and the analysts revising their price for a stock towards south, their perks, compensation and even jobs are at stake. While that is true and will be for the kind of business they are in, I am not sure if they ca... [continue]

LIBOR reforms
tejbir -
Jun, 15 2008
The
BBA
(British Bankers’ Association) is undertaking reforms in over two decades old LIBOR, a benchmark for worldwide financial transactions. You can read in detail about the steps being considered
here
.
One can judge the significance of this benchmark from the fact that over $ 350 trillion deals in IRS and over $ 10 trillion deals in loans worldwide are linked to LIBOR.
I took the news with ... [continue]

When will the elephants dance?
I have been a very satisfied customer of MTNL’s broadband services and today when I went to MTNL’s office to ask for a connection (I had given up my earlier connection over an year back when I moved to Ahmedabad) they told that it will take no less than 6 months. Though disheartened I still thought I’d go for it and asked for the various plans to choose from. The lad... [continue]

I was not sure of where we were heading with stock market index zooming past 20,000, INR showing strength at 38, the 10-year paper close to 7%, inflation below 4%, IIP at levels over 10% and the GDP at levels moving closer to double digits.
With the current levels of the above economic parameters (index at decent 16500, INR 41, 10-yr paper 8+%, inflation 8%, IIP 8%, GDP 8%) one gets the feeling th... [continue]

Are men so pervert?!
tejbir -
May, 18 2008
When it happened the first time I did not even care to bother about it. But when it happened the second time I was with a friend of mine and he brought to attention this view which I shrugged off as rubbish. However a few days later it happened the third time and my friend, who was with me then too, gave the same explanation which I rejected yet again though with a little less confidence. And then...
